Trademark Registration

ACL provides trademark registration service in Nigeria, helping businesses protect their brand identity from the very start and throughout their growth journey. A trademark is more than a logo or name—it is a commercial asset that distinguishes your products or services in the marketplace and gives you enforceable rights against imitation, unfair competition, and brand dilution.

ACL’s trademark registration service begins with an advisory session to understand the mark you want to protect (name, logo, slogan, label, or combination mark) and the goods or services it will cover. ACL then conducts a trademark availability search to identify identical or confusingly similar marks already on the register. This step is crucial, as it reduces the risk of objections and saves time and cost. Where issues are identified, ACL advises on brand modifications or alternative filing strategies.

After clearance, ACL prepares and files the application at the Nigerian Trade Marks Registry, ensuring the correct classification of goods/services, proper representation of the mark, and accurate applicant information. ACL monitors the application through examination, acceptance, and publication in the Trademarks Journal, and provides representation in the event of an objection or opposition. Upon successful completion of the process, ACL helps secure the Certificate of Registration and advises on ongoing trademark maintenance, renewals, assignments, and brand enforcement options.

Trademark protection is particularly important at the company formation stage. Incorporation with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registers a company name, but it does not automatically grant exclusive rights to use that name as a brand for goods or services. A newly formed company may still face infringement claims or be forced to rebrand if another party owns a prior trademark. By registering trademarks early, businesses strengthen their market position, enhance investor confidence, support franchising and licensing opportunities, and reduce costly disputes in the future.

With ACL, clients receive practical, business-focused guidance to build a legally protected brand from day one.
